Your strengths and weaknesses will affect your choice of career opportunities. The next task will be determining the steps needed to achieve your goals of your choice. You will start by creating a Long-term Vision Statement which will list your aspirations followed by a list of goals that will help you see through your vision.
This statement acts as the motivating foundation for your choice of career direction so take the time to consider the questions. Basically, you will write a personal statement declaring where you’d like to be in five to ten years, and it can be as simple or as detailed as you want.
Ask yourself:
- What do you want to accomplish?

- Which values drive your decision?
- Will your choices benefit others?
- What does/ will this accomplishment mean to you emotionally?

(Write 3-5 paragraphs)
Now that you are aware of what your long-term vision is, it is time to break this down into manageable goals. It is all very well to say you would like to be working as…………in six years; though if you don’t know how to get to that point, you won’t.
Manageable steps will keep you on track and keep you motivated. Ask yourself:
- Do you require any specific qualifications or education to achieve your goals?
- Will you need to master any skills or competencies?
- Do you need to secure a promotion within your current career?
- Do you need more experience in a particular area or field in order to secure the promotion within your current career?
- Do you need to work in an area/field to compliment your skills and knowledge?
Now, go over your Long-term Vision Statement and apply the SMART guidelines to it.
Use the SMART guideline to ensure your goals are achievable. SMART stands for:
- Specific – make your goals specific, focusing on one particular outcome.
- Measurable – you need to define an outcome, so you know when you have achieved each goal.
- Achievable – your goal needs to be in the realm of possibility and reasonably achievable.
- Relevant – your goals should be relevant to your final outcome and should not distract from it.
- Time sensitive – you should set time limits to achieve each goal in order to remain focused and motivated.
