Over the past few weeks, The Australian College of Nursing (ACN) have proudly introduced our Stage One, Two, Three and Four Emerging Nurse Leaders (ENLs). Today, we are delighted to introduce nine exceptional individuals participating in Stage Five, Empowered to Lead. We congratulate all participants on their selection into our prestigious award program. We hope you enjoy reading about their ambitions for the future and how they anticipate the ENL program will support them on their leadership journeys.
Jessica Balson MACN
Jessica has extensive cancer nursing experience, having worked in a variety of areas including haematology, bone marrow transplantation, medical oncology, palliative care, clinical trials, radiotherapy and day therapies. She has completed Graduate Certificates in Oncology/Palliative care and Intensive Care Nursing and is currently undertaking a Masters of Advanced Practice by Research at the University of Melbourne.

Jessica currently works as a Clinical Nurse Educator within Cancer Services at Western Health. She oversees education and development for nurses working in oncology and is a member of the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia Education Committee. She is passionate about Indigenous health having spent time working in remote Aboriginal communities in the northern territory. When she is not at work she loves travelling, food and wine and being outdoors.

Gabrielle Cameron MACN
Gabrielle is honoured to be participating in Stage 5 of the ENL program during its inaugural year for enrolled nursing. After completing her Diploma of Nursing, she commenced her career working in a rural setting which includes residential care, acute care, and emergency and outpatient departments.

Gabrielle enjoys working in the community where she grew up and enjoys the challenge of working in a small rural hospital with varied and limited resources. Over the years, she has established a respectful relationship with the aging members of the community through aged and palliative care. This allows her to acquire new skills, pursue further goals, all the while providing a familiar face during a difficult circumstances to long-time community members. Gabrielle’s hobbies include reading, as well as baking and decorating elaborate cakes for special occasions.

Stefanie Edson MACN
Stefanie is the acting Associate Nurse Unit Manager of the Royal Hobart Hospital Emergency Department, having had left the corporate world of sales for a more human friendly profession.She excelled through a Bachelor of Nursing and was awarded numerous scholarships and the honour of being the student response speaker for the Charles Darwin University

Having completed her graduate year through the Royal Adelaide Hospital transition to practice program, she moved to Tasmania to specialise in emergency nursing. Having completed a Graduate Diploma in Emergency Nursing Stefanie is now working towards a Masters program. She is passionate about improving the emergency care environment especially developing and supporting culture development in the nursing profession.
Originally from the Barossa Valley, South Australia there is no surprise that outside of the emergency department Stefanie enjoys travelling for food and coffee adventures. On days off you will find her as a regular at the Hobart coffee spots, cooking or enjoying Tasmanian outdoor adventures with friends.

Prachi Javalekar MACN
Prachi had thoroughly enjoyed her professional transition into nursing with several accolades including Sydney Nursing School’s ‘Academic Merit Award’ in recognition of her outstanding meritorious performance, ‘Summer Scholar’ role to participate in research and ‘International Council of Nurses scholarship’ to attend the 25th Quadrennial Congress as a student ambassador.

Cherylee Meanwell MACN
Cherylee grew up on the Central Coast of New South Wales and currently works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in the PACU at Wyong hospital. She has been with CCLHD for many years commencing her career as a EEN progressing through to her Registered Nursing and now in a CNS role.

During her time, she has worked in a variety of nursing roles such as mental health, surgical, medical, drug & alcohol and internal ambulance services. Cherylee found her true passion 5 years ago while working in PACU/ anaesthetic nursing. She is passionate about supporting the learner, mentoring, teaching and leadership in nursing. In her current role, Cherylee is a team leader in PACU, patient care, supporting staff (new and current). She is also the resident auditor for the peri-operative unit covering the monthly schedule which keeps her very busy. Cherylee hopes to gain leadership qualities to assist her to motivate learners and staff in working towards common goals and to inspire others.

Hannah Skelton MACN
Hannah graduated from Western Sydney University with a Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced) with distinction. She then continued her studies, completing her Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) degree, with a thesis titled ‘Facilitating closeness between babies with congenital abnormalities and their parents: neonatal nurses’ perspectives’, for which she obtained First Class Honours and the University Medal for Academic Achievement. Hannah has recently enrolled in her PhD at Western Sydney University.

Following graduation, Hannah spent six months working in Respiratory Medicine before she found her niche in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing (NICN). Her favourite part of the NICU is watching the babies she cared for when they were critically unwell go home as happy, healthy children with their parents. She has a keen interest in research and believes that research is the way to advance the nursing profession by making changes which benefit staff, patients and families. When she is not working, she enjoys spending time with her fur babies, her two beagles- Ivy and Zoey.

Arun Thomas MACN
Arun Thomas is an inspiring and emerging leader in the healthcare sector who has a strong focus and passion for leadership, governance, advocacy & aged care. A Registered Nurse, he became one of the youngest public hospital directors in Victoria when he was appointed by Health Minister in 2017 at Stawell Regional Health, where he continue to provide strategic direction and clinical governance expertise.

In 2018, Arun was awarded Victorian state-wide Celebrating Aged Care Leadership Award and became a finalist – Excellence in Leadership by Victorian Healthcare Association for championing resident care and safety. In 2019, he was nominated and awarded the Victorian Young Achiever of the Year and became the recipient of Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria Regional & Rural Health Achiever Award. Arun is an example of the power of dedication, hard work, resilience and support of others. And his mission now, more than ever, is to help and empower young people along with championing and advocating health care safety and quality for vulnerable people in rural and regional Victoria.

Avril Van den Bout MACN
Avril has been working for WSLHD since 2015, over this time she has obtained the role of Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Mental Health High Dependency Unit and been involved in a number of quality improvement initiatives. Additionally, Avril has completed both the Masters of Mental Health Nursing degree and the Clinical Leadership Program and is currently a facilitator for the Transformational Leadership Program.

Avril currently holds the position of Safety Culture Coordinator for WSLHD. The overarching goal of the role is to provide high level leadership in safety and culture and to act as an interface between the executive team and front line staff to support the development, implementation and evaluation of initiatives that aim to improve and maintain safety, clinical practice and patient outcomes.
As an emerging nurse leader, Avril has a keen interest in patient safety and strongly advocate for strategic engagement of frontline staff in all aspects of enhancing patient safety and quality. Avril represents the district in various forums and committees and in doing so, aim to aid in achieving the strategic priorities of WSLHD.

Naomi White MACN
After completing Bachelor of Nursing and Paramedicine Naomi has gone on to employment at Ballarat Base Hospital working in the paediatric ward. At the beginning of 2019 she secured a role as Associate Nurse Unit Manager.

Naomi continues to further her development and education completing her post graduate certificate in Paediatric Nursing and Cert IV in Assessment and Training. Naomi has a drive to improve and enhance the safety and quality of children’s healthcare in mixed hospitals. She has been involved and a leader in many local, national and international quality improvement research and practice changes. Outside of work Naomi is an active community member involved in local sporting clubs, foster care, and enjoys creating silver jewellery and refurbishing furniture.
