Distinguished Professor Patsy Yates AM. RN. FACN, FAAN. Executive Dean, Faculty of Health. Queensland University of Technology (QUT), was introduced by Lyceum Past President and former Registered Nurse (RN), Dr Deborah Prior.
Professor Yates’ talk, “Nursing the World to Health: Insights in this International Year of the Nurse and Midwife” was well received by an appreciative audience.
Professor Yates noted that this was the first International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, which was designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to honour the contributions of nurses and to celebrate 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale. In her talk, Patsy outlined new trends in health care including precision health care, virtual health care, health care economics and the health-related research undertaken at QUT. Patsy concluded her talk by referring to the pioneering practice of Florence Nightingale in promoting data collection and, in particular sanitation and hygiene, which is equally relevant today as communities deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Yates was generous in responding to a number of thoughtful questions about palliative care versus the assisted dying movement, equality of access to online Virtual Health Care for marginalized and minority groups.
Member and former RN. Patricia Mitchell gave an impassioned expression of thanks for Professor Yates’s talk and for highlighting the value of the nurses in patient care.
