Domestic travel has largely re-opened in Australia and to celebrate, we have teamed up with Jon Baines Tours to present a special ‘Nurses Along the Murray Past and Present’ Tour. The CPD Accredited Tour runs from 19-26 April 2021 and provides a nursing perspective on the beautiful idyllic towns on the Murray River. A full itinerary can be found on the Jon Baines website.
To mark the official opening of registrations for the tour, we have listed our top five reasons to book your ticket for the tour today!

Domestic travel is back!
For months, most of us have been limited to travelling in the vicinity of our own state or Territory. However, with the new relaxing of state borders, now is the perfect opportunity to visit a new part of Australia! The towns of Wodonga, Rutherglen, Echuca and Swan Hill are waiting for you to explore all the hidden gems they have to offer (more on that later).
-
Go on a historical journey
The nursing profession has been pivotal to the history of the region. The tour takes a step back in time by visiting the tombstone and redgum carving of Nurse Rosen (pictured above), sharing the stories of the early rural nurses in the region among others. Attendees will also learn about the broader history and have the option to march with the Barham Koondrook RSL on Anzac Day.
-
Learn about the current experiences of your peers
Nurses play many different roles across the vast landmass of our country and the Murray River Region is no different. The tours visit many local health workplaces, including the Wodonga Hospital, where you will learn about nursing on the border during the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour also provides insight into how design and landscape assist healing at the Albury Wodonga Cancer Centre, how past segues into present at Echuca Hospital, where the old redbrick hospital adjoins the clean lines of the new architect-designed centre, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Explore local attractions
Cruising on a paddle steamer, seeing the historic Catalina Flying Boat and amazing art silos, and sampling artisan food and wine are just some of the activities you will get to enjoy. The Region is alive with activities which suit people of all ages and the tour will certainly show you the best that is on offer.
-
Be shown around by a prominent nursing leader
The tour is led by Professor Linda Shields FACN, an ACN Board Member and internationally respected professor and with expertise in nursing and social history. Linda is passionate about the way we care for children and their families, and about what it is like for children to live with a chronic illness when they live in rural and remote areas, a long way from treatment centres that are usually in the big cities.
