Urinary incontinence, faecal incontinence and constipation are prevalent conditions affecting people across the lifespan; therefore, nurses working across a diversity of practice settings require an understanding of continence management to sensitively plan and implement culturally safe, person-centred care. This unit of study will explore key aspects of continence management including anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, barriers to continence and assessment and management. By undertaking this unit of study students will gain knowledge and skills in the provision of evidence-based continence specific care and will be referred to clinical practice guidelines.
Students are referred to current literature and best practice models to critically evaluate current clinical practice.
