This unit is suitable for nurses caring for people diagnosed with cancer in a variety of practice settings including acute wards, specialist oncology units, outpatient and community care. This unit develops the fundamental knowledge and skills required to provide holistic, evidence-based care to people living with a cancer diagnosis. It contains information about the biology of cancer, prevention, diagnosis and detection. It also covers the principles of evidence-based cancer treatments and role of the specialist cancer nurse providing culturally safe, person centred care, through interprofessional collaboration. Survivorship, oncological emergencies, palliative and end of life care are explored. Students are introduced to concepts that will enable them to meet the physical and emotional needs of adults living with cancer and their families, thereby enhancing their health-related quality of life.
