The History of Australian Nurses in the First World War: An ACN Centenary Commemorative Trilogy

ACN is proud to partner Dr Ruth Rae FACN in a commemorative publication of The History of Australian Nurses in the First World War: An ACN Centenary Commemorative Trilogy (the Trilogy).

The Trilogy details the important contribution of Australian nurses who served in the First World War (1914-18) and highlights the valuable service Australian nurses provided, to not only the servicemen, but to the ongoing professionalism of civilian and military nursing in this country.

The Trilogy features:

  • Book one – From Narromine to the Nile (2nd edition)
  • Book two – Scarlet Poppies (3rd edition)
  • Book three – Veiled Lives (3rd edition)
  • ACN First World War Nursing Nominal Roll

The Trilogy offers updated and redesigned editions of Dr Rae’s previous printed publications, Scarlet Poppies and Veiled Lives. Her third book on the topic, From Narromine to the Nile, although available as an e-book, will be available in print form for the first time.

In recognition of the importance of the nursing profession to the centenary celebrations the Trilogy will also feature the ACN First World War Nursing Nominal Roll (the Nominal Roll); an additional, stand alone, document within the box set Trilogy. The Nominal Roll features a list of nurses who served, providing families with a tangible keepsake honouring their relative’s involvement in the war effort.

This completes the trilogy which provides a comprehensive history of Australian nursing and the individuals who served with distinction in all theatres of war. Wherever Australian and allied soldiers fought Australian nurses served.

Ruth Rae has been a registered nurse since 1978 and has worked as a freelance researcher and writer for more than twenty years. Her PhD thesis ‘Jessie Tomlins: An Australian army nurse – World War One’ (2001) highlighted a dearth of historical material about the contribution of Australian nurses who served overseas during this period. After a further three years of research and writing The NSW College of Nursing published Scarlet Poppies – the Army Experience of Australian Nurses during World War One (2004) which gives a history of a number of Australian nurses who served in all theatres of the 1914-18 war. This research was followed by a further three years of research into the social histories of Australian war nurses which was published Veiled Lives: Threading Australian Nursing history into the fabric of the First World War. (The College of Nursing, 2007).

Since commencing her research Ruth has compiled a comprehensive nominal roll of Australian nurses who served. The nominal roll has recently been updated and includes the names of a number of Australian nurses who served overseas but did not belong to a nursing service. Dr Rae has endeavoured to record the details of as many nurses as possible in recognition of the valuable contribution our colleagues provided to not only the servicemen but to the ongoing professionalism of civilian and military nursing in this country. In recognition of the importance of the nursing profession to the centenary celebrations the nominal roll will form an additional, stand alone, document within the box set trilogy.
